Your Dog Had Diarrhea. Now What?

A calm step-by-step for the first 48 hours — and the signs that mean skip all this and call the vet.

For an otherwise bright, adult dog with a single bout of soft stool, most cases settle with simple supportive care at home. The goal for the first day or two is to give the gut less work, not to medicate. 1

The first 24 hours

Keep water freely available at all times — hydration matters more than food. Many vets suggest a brief food pause of 8 to 12 hours for adult dogs (never for puppies), then small, frequent portions of a bland diet: typically plain boiled chicken or lean meat with plain white rice, no seasoning, no fat. 1

Days 2–4: the road back

Once stools firm up, transition back to the regular diet gradually over a few days, mixing increasing amounts of normal food into the bland meals. Jumping straight back to a full normal meal is the most common way a nearly-recovered gut relapses. 2

And keep a note of the episode — date, duration, anything unusual eaten. One bout is noise. A pattern of repeated bouts is data your vet can actually use. 2
